STRING OF LIFE
String of Life explores the profound intersections of motherhood, cultural inheritance, and identity through works featuring the rich and symbolic colors of indigo and cochineal. Drawing from both personal experience and cultural heritage, these pieces delve into themes of life, birth, and rebirth, while reflecting on the transformative journey of early motherhood.
The use of Cochineal, derived from the grinding of bugs, yields colors from vibrant red to soft pinks and purples. The transformation of the organic material into a vibrant dye echos the life altering role of motherhood. Red representing life itself, draws parallels to the blood that ties a mother and child through the umbilical cord, while softer pink tones speak to the tenderness and care inherent in nurturing a new life. These colors capture the intense emotional spectrum of motherhood—from the vitality of birth to the softer, more intimate moments of connection. The use of cochineal adds a layer of historical and personal resonance, tying my own experiences as a woman to the broader legacies of my Mexican heritage.
Hilo de Vida ( String of Life), De mi Vientre (From My Womb), Mis Venas (My Veins), and Cordón de Vida (Life Cord)—which feature cochineal cords offer a profound reflection on the physical and emotional aspects of motherhood. The umbilical cord, rich with blood, serves as a lifeline, making red a natural metaphor for this essential bond. These works symbolically connect the act of giving life with both the literal and metaphorical ties that exist between a mother and her child. These titles also suggest a personal exploration of what it means to be a mother, emphasizing the physicality (womb), the life force (veins), and the nurturing connection (umbilical cord). The intricate patterns and floral motifs within other works reflect both individual identity—expressed through personal birth symbols—and the broader cultural significance.
At its core, the work is an introspective exploration of my experience in early motherhood—the visceral and beautiful reality. It answers the question, “Who am I now?” as I reflect on my evolving identity and the delicate balance between creation, care, and cultural continuity, aiming to foster a connection that transcends time.
